How Long Does EV Charger Installation Take?

Most Level 2 installs are done in 2–4 hours. A panel upgrade or a long circuit run adds time. Here's the full timeline, from your first call to a working charger.

The Quick Answer

A straightforward Level 2 EV charger installation — where your panel has spare capacity and the charger mounts near the panel — takes 2 to 4 hours on install day. Add a long conduit run or a panel upgrade and it can stretch to most of a day. But the install itself is only one part of the timeline; here's everything that happens.

Step 1: Assessment & Quote (Same Day, ~15 Minutes)

It starts with a call. We ask about your vehicle, the charger you have or want, where you'd like it mounted, and your electrical panel. For many homes we can quote right over the phone. If your setup is more involved — an older panel, a detached garage, a long run — we'll do a quick on-site or photo assessment first. Either way you get a flat quote before any work.

Step 2: Permit (1–5 Days)

EV charger installs in Colorado require an electrical permit. For a standard Level 2 install, permits in Parker, Castle Rock, Lone Tree, and Douglas County are usually issued quickly — often within a day or two. We pull the permit for you; you don't handle any paperwork. Permitted work is also what makes your install eligible for the Colorado and federal rebates.

Step 3: Install Day (2–4 Hours Typical)

Here's what happens on install day for a standard Level 2 charger:

  1. Confirm the locationWe verify the charger position and circuit path with you before starting.
  2. Run the circuitWe install a dedicated 240V circuit from your panel to the charger location, in conduit where needed.
  3. Mount & connectWe mount the unit and either hardwire it or install a NEMA 14-50 outlet.
  4. Breaker & testWe add the correctly sized breaker, energize the circuit, and test the charger with your vehicle if it's available.
  5. WiFi setupFor smart chargers, we connect it to your home network and app.

If everything is close and the panel has room, we're often in and out in a couple of hours.

What Adds Time

  • Panel upgrade — if your panel is full or undersized, a panel upgrade adds several hours and usually means a full-day job, since the utility has to disconnect and reconnect power. See do I need a panel upgrade?
  • Long circuit runs — a charger on the opposite side of the house, an upstairs unit, or a detached garage means more conduit and more time.
  • Finished walls — fishing wire through finished drywall takes longer than an open, unfinished garage or basement.
  • Load management devices — if we install a smart splitter or load-management device to avoid a panel upgrade, that adds a little setup time. See EV charger without a panel upgrade.

Step 4: Inspection (After Install)

After the install, the work is inspected by the local jurisdiction to confirm it's up to code. You don't need to do anything for this — we schedule it and handle it. Once it passes, your install is fully documented for your rebate claims.

Total Timeline

For most Parker-area homes, the whole process — from your first call to a working, inspected charger — takes about a week, with the actual install being a single 2–4 hour visit. Call (715) 396-1720 and we'll give you a specific timeline for your home.

Installation Time FAQ

How long does a Level 2 EV charger installation take?

A standard install where your panel has capacity and the charger is near the panel usually takes 2 to 4 hours. A long conduit run or a panel upgrade can make it most of a day. We tell you the expected time when we quote.

How long does it take if I need a panel upgrade?

A panel upgrade adds several hours and often spans a full day, because the utility has to shut off and reconnect power. Sometimes the upgrade and charger install happen the same day; sometimes the upgrade is scheduled first. We coordinate all of it.

How soon can you schedule my installation?

In the Parker and Douglas County area, we can often schedule within a few days. Permitting is usually quick for a standard install. Panel upgrades take a little longer because of utility coordination.

Do I have to be home for the whole installation?

You need to be home to let us in and confirm the charger location, but not to watch the whole install. For a panel upgrade, power is off for part of the day, so plan around that.
